| 2008 Seeley Lake 200 Incomplete-Withdrew after 100 miles at the Lincoln Checkpoint The Seeley Lake 200 started Friday afternoon about 3:10 P.M., on the 11th of January 2008. It was 39 degrees F and snowing a wet snow. All the kids, the sled bag and myself got soaking wet before the start and stayed that way all the way to Lincoln. We were fourth out of the starting line. After the start, the temperatures ranged between 20 to 36 degrees F with off and on snow showers. At the White Tail Ranch checkpoint, it was snowing but was also warm enough to take a few hours rest on top of the sled with no sleeping bag. All in all, the kids ran good considering everything that happened!!! The team had an excellent start out of the chute. Our team was probably the fastest team up the hill. Everybody was pretty impressed with the team. With 5 of the kids getting sick and 1 injured, we would have had to drop them at the Lincoln checkpoint which would have left us with 6 dogs to finish the last 100 miles of the race. So, we withdrew from the race in Lincoln with the kids health as our main concern. The Kids' health and safety comes first over any race. |
| 2008 Montana Race to the Sky Incomplete-Withdrew after 52 miles at the Re-Start in Lincoln The 2008 Montana Race to the Sky started Saturday morning at 10:00 A.M., on the 9th of February 2008. It was 1 degree F, windy and lite snow was falling. Reports came in before the start of high winds and drifting snow on the trail with continuous changing conditions. All the kids and myself were ready, felt good and were full of excitement. We were ninth out of the starting line. After the start, the temperatures ranged between 32 to 38 degrees F with high winds and warm thermals, blowing and drifting snow, and off and on snow showers. The Kids ran good and made good time over the first 30 miles. As the temperatures went up we made several stops to ensure that the kids were not overheating. The trail was tough to navigate with the drifting snow which made for a "roller-coaster ride" all the way to the Deer Lodge Checkpoint. We finally arrived at the Deer Lodge Checkpoint at 12:42 A.M.. At the Re-start in Lincoln on Sunday, we got the bad news from the Race Marshall Jim O'Donnell that he was withdrawing us from the race. He calculated that we would have had a 14 hour mandatory layover at the White Tail Checkpoint and felt that we would NOT be able to make up time being that the trail conditions were getting worse and he believed that we would not be able to finish the race before the cutoff time. At the Re-Start in Lincoln, the weather was terrible. It started to rain about 3:00 A.M. in the morning and did not let up all day. The trail became wet, heavy and slow. It was reported that 8 feet of snow fell at Huckleberry Pass and the drifts were extreme. With Valley rains and heavy Mountain snows Sunday night and Monday morning, the section of trail from Seeley Lake and Owl Creek and back became totally impassable with extreme avalanche danger. The race officials re-routed the race back to the White Tail Checkpoint and cut nearly 60 miles off of the race due to the weather and extreme trail conditions. After making the celebrity run at the Re-Start, I was glad but very disappointed that we were not attempting to finish the race. All in all, the kids ran good considering everything that happened, the weather and the extreme trail conditions!!! However, the team did have an excellent start out of the chute and did have a good run to the Deer Lodge Checkpoint with all things considered. We learned a lot and gained more experience and will apply this knowledge to next year's race-season. The withdrawal from the race in Lincoln was disappointing but the kids health is our main concern. |
